All Positive Things
âCome with me to my parentsâ next weekend.â
âWhat?â Violet asked the next morning. Sheâd slept longer and harder than she normally did and she figured the wine played a part in that along with the fabulous night of sex sheâd shared with Trace.
When she finally opened her eyes in the morning it was to the smell of coffee. Sheâd thrown the covers back and made her way downstairs to see Trace sitting at the table with his laptop open and a cup of coffee next to him while deep in his work.
So much for thinking he was going to have breakfast made for her and sheâd started to laugh and he jumped.
That was over an hour ago.
âYou heard me,â he said. âIâm going home on Saturday to spend the weekend with my family for the holiday. Come with me. You said you donât have plans. I donât want to leave you alone.â
âIâve been alone for holidays before. Itâs not a big deal.â
He frowned and dug into the omelet sheâd put in front of him. Heâd continued to work while sheâd showered and gotten dressed, then came down and made breakfast for them both. He had given her a cup of coffee though when she returned to the kitchen.
âIt is for me. My mother and grandmother would never let me live it down,â he said.
âDo they know about me?â she asked. This was the first she was hearing this.
âI might have mentioned your name when I talked to my mother once.â
âOh,â she said. âI guess you meant it when you said you were taking it as it came.â
He frowned. âI told you that. You didnât believe me?â
âI wanted to,â she said.
âThen do it. Seriously. I heard you turn everyoneâs offer down last night. I have to go home. If I stay and things do work out with us like I hope, my mother will hold it against you that you kept me back. You donât want to get off on that bad foot, do you?â
âWow. Talk about guilt in a sneaky way.â
She wasnât sure how she felt about the words heâd just said.
That he was thinking more about the future.
He wanted things to work out.
He didnât want his mother to think ill of her.
All positive things.
âDid it work?â he asked.
âNo,â she said.
His shoulders dropped. âIâve got the week to convince you to go with me.â
âLet me ask. Why do you want me to? Not just because you donât want me home alone. You donât know me well enough. Maybe I like being alone.â
âI think you tell yourself you like it, but we know the truth. But that didnât answer your question. I want you to go because I want to be with you and I canât be in both places at once.â
âYour family comes first?â she asked. Maybe there was more to his ex leaving him than what he let on. Could be he was a Mamaâs boy.
âNot like you think,â he said. âI missed a lot of holidays. I had no choice.
